Description

Maghery, Dungloe, coastal walk.

An Machaire In the heart of the Rosses, Dungloe,

allow about 3 hours or so for this great walk,

Walk along the coast of Maghery (sandy plain)      with history and heritage …. Passing the 18th century red house Kelp factory, view the signal tower built around 1804-06 during the Napoleonic War and the soap stone underground quarry used to make talcum powder, this mining for soapstone had started in 1860’s, this mining shaft was built 7 metres below sea level and the main tunnel went for several hundred metres out under the sea which followed a seam of top quality white soapstone.

Termon stone circle is worth a visit, this circle 20mts in diameter and consists of low granite boulders, this stone circle dates back from the early bronze age (c.2300-1500 BC) .

Lough Aghnish Promontory Fort dates from the Iron age (c.500BC-432AD), these type of defensive walls are usually found on sea promontories but this one one is located on Lough Aghnish lake.

Another  great coastal walk with sea arches on the edge of the wild Atlantic Ocean.
